(DUE ON THE LAST DAY OF CLASS) The purpose of this assignment is simply to exercise your ability to discuss intelligently some aspect of an environmental problem--just as if you were writing an Op-Ed piece for a newspaper or trying to convince your friends in a political debate. The structure of the assignment is as follows: (1) Identify some environmental issue that is either close to your own home (geographically), or else close to your own interests or activities. Please see either Pat or myself if youТre having difficulty coming up with ideas. But just to get the ball rolling, here are a few possibilities Чeffect of irrigation on domestic water quality (suitable for someone from the Imperial Valley or Central Valley) --degradation of the kelp forests (for someone from the Point Loma, or comparable, areas) --impact of automobile traffic patterns on the carbon cycle (for someone from Los Angeles) --controls on marine coastal water quality (surfers might be interested here) --causes/effects of new patterns of melting Sierra snowpack (hikers, people who get their water from the Sierras) (2) Define the scope of the problem by outlining the scales involvedЧthe geographic scale, the time scale, and the important controlling processes. This is, of course, the systems approach to dealing with the environment. (3) Outline a possible set of solutions or ways to address the problem; in the process, evaluate what, precisely, those solutions might entail (4) Arrive at an overall prognosis. How likely is that this problem will persist, perhaps even if the possible strategies for remediation are adopted? The style of the paper should be essentially that of a journalist (like that of a typical newspaper feature that you might find in the New York Times or the Wall Street Journal). The opening paragraph should engage the readerТs interest in identifying the problem. The middle portion should flesh out the theme and characterization of the problem; quotes and figures are fine here. The conclusion should leave the readers satisfied that theyТve learned something. The overall length should be on the order of 5-10 pages, though there are no hard and fast length requirements. However, itТs always a good idea to say as much as possible in as few pages as possible.
